August 10, 2008 CSCLUG meeting was held at Muddy Waters Coffee Bar at 1331 Ashley River Road. Old Business Bylaws After much discussion, the consensus was we should have by-laws, but they should be very simple and only to recognize the roles members are already filling. The by-laws would acknowledge the GPL and Creative Commons Licensing the Charleston, SC Linux Users Group will publish under. Those interested in writing the by-laws can write up drafts and submit them to the group. The group still needs to decide on formalized role titles, but in general wishes to stay away from very authoritative titles. The hope is to have rule by group as much as possible, with individual titles given to those members who act as a point-of-contact or action person for a specific area. Zenko Klapko is currently the President/Community Outreach Chairman. Elizabeth Ann West is volunteering as the Media Relations Chairwoman. Joshua West is volunteering as Website Administrator. Any member can volunteer for a position in the group, and just submit their duties and responsibilities to the group for addition to the by-laws. Presentations Zenko Klapko gave a demonstration of the Laser Tag application ported into Linux. A few members of the group plan to test the equipment out in better conditions for viewing. Zenko Klapko also showed off his eee, a very small computer with no moving parts. It only has a 2 GB hard drive, but with 2 USB ports and SD card slot, this is easily expandable. The eee also came with wireless support, so it is perfect for basic funcationality like document creation and web applications/email. The size of the computer is very handy, and much more portable than a traditional laptop, without being too small to impact productivity (like trying to type more than a few hundred words on a PDA). New Business Demonstration Day The Demonstration Day is coming together for September 14, 2008. Elizabeth Ann West shared the advertisement for the event at charleston.net. There are a few mistakes in the posting she has contacted the editorial staff about correcting. Matthew Gregg has placed an order for Ubuntu Live CDs, and Eugene will have a few Fedora CDs on hand in case the Fedora representative is not present. The group will bring their distribution library and blank media so we can make distribution CDs on the spot should we run out. Rather than a formal linear presentation, the group wants to create "stations" where participants can hear a 5 minute or less spiel, test drive the computer, and move on to anything else that interests them. The dry run has been moved to September 6, 2008 at the Wests House, 303 Stone Post Rd. Moncks Corner, SC at 3 PM. It will also be a potluck barbeque and social gathering. Any questions, contact Elizabeth or Josh West. Elizabeth West will provide a generic flyer as soon as possible for members to advertise the Linux Demonstration Day at work, school, and in the community. Website Adrian reported problems posting comments to the website, but the problem is blamed on a security update conducted around the time of posting. There shouldn't be any other issues with comments, but any members encountering problems should contact Josh West. The website will also have the personal messaging feature added. This feature will allow registered users to message members through the csclug.org website, but never see individual email addresses unless the member receiving the message responds back. This feature can also be turned off by any member choosing to do so. Josh West is looking for a backup location for the csclug.org website. Brian Muller suggested Butterfat, LLC as a possible solution once he speaks to other business partners. SE Linuxfest Eugene Mah gave a presentation on the latest with the South Eastern Linuxfest. The organizers are still in the preliminary stages of planning, but are leaning towards a location in the northern part of South Carolina. The goal is to model the SE Linuxfest off of the successful Ohio Linuxfest. Current locations in discussion are the Spartanburg Expo Center sometime in June of 2009 to accommodate the major guest speaker's schedule. The tentative guest speaker is Chris Bona of Google. The organizers of the SE Linuxfest meet for chat on Tuesdays at 9 PM EST on (need channel or link info). Group Chat Matthew Gregg raised the issue of group business possibly conducted via chat in between meetings. He has a way for everyone to chat, and posted it in the list serv, but from the reaction by a few group members the information was lost in the email shuffle. Here is the information once more so all members can be reminded we do have a chat ability. :) Instructions: http://fourcs.org/wiki/Docs/Jabber Original Mail Post: http://listserv.opensourcesociety.org/pipermail/csclug/2008-July/000264....
